geography

View of Seyssel

Seyssel is located at 258  m , about 25 kilometers west of the city of Annecy and 37 kilometers southwest of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The market town extends on the western bank of the Rhone opposite Seyssel in the Haute-Savoie department , in the broad valley between the Grand Colombier in the west and the Montagne des Princes in the east.

The area of the 2.40 square kilometers large municipality covers a section of the Rhône valley. The eastern border runs along the Rhône, which flows here in a wide valley from north to south and narrows significantly in the Seyssel area. The Rhône is dammed both below and above Seyssel (Barrage de Seyssel). From the course of the Rhône river, the community area extends westward over the flat valley and the adjacent slopes to a plateau in front of the foot of the Jura. This plateau is subdivided by the valleys of short side streams of the Rhône. At 332  m , the highest elevation of Seyssel is reached here.

In addition to the actual town center, Seyssel also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Morez ( 310  m ) in a side valley of the Rhône
  • Les Séchalets ( 280  m ) on the western slope of the Rhône valley

The neighboring communities of Seyssel are Corbonod in the west and north, Seyssel in the east and Anglefort in the south.

history

The area around Seyssel was already populated during Roman times. The Gallo-Roman estate Condate was located near the hamlet of Vens east of the Rhône on the soil of today's Seyssel (Haute-Savoie) . Numerous wall foundations and traces of a Roman road have been preserved from this time.

The village was first mentioned in 1096 under the name Saisel . Later, the names Saysel (1155), Saysellum (1273), Saxaillo (1282), Sayssel (1293), and from 1345 the current name Seyssel has been passed down.

Since the 11th century Seyssel has been under the control of the Counts of Savoy, who founded a castle here. Already in the 13th century the place received certain rights of freedom and developed into an important port and transshipment point on the Rhône. With the construction of the first bridge at that time, Seyssel became a regionally important trading town. In 1601 the western part of the town came to France. The division of Seyssel was finally sealed in 1760 by a treaty between France and Savoy. The smaller part to the west of the Rhône remained with France, while the eastern part came to Savoy.

From 1793 to 2015 Seyssel was the main town (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of Seyssel .

Attractions

The Saint-François-de-Sales church was consecrated in 1901. There were three monasteries in Seyssel in the late Middle Ages, but today they are secularized and used for other purposes. The Augustinian monastery (14th century) now houses a school, the Capuchin monastery was built in the 14th century in the former castle of the Counts of Savoy, and the 17th century Saint Bernard convent is now privately owned. Various town houses from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved in the old town center, including the house of François de Bonivard. The monumental statue of Notre-Dame-du-Rhône stands on the suspension bridge from 1838, which connects the two Seyssels. In 1987 a new bridge was opened over the Rhône south of Seyssel.
