history

The parish church of Saint-Maurice

There were settlements in the lower Ain Valley as early as the Bronze and Iron Ages, the remains of which have been found mainly in the neighboring communities of Château-Gaillard and Chazey-sur-Ain. Bronze Age weapons and Roman coins were found in Saint-Maurice.

middle Ages

The first mentions from the Middle Ages can be found in the 13th century under the name Sanctus Mauricius in Meria ultra fluvium Enne . At that time there was already a small estate in Saint-Maurice, which was part of the possessions of the lords of Châtillon-la-Palud. In 1323 they were owed loyal to the Dauphin von Viennois and after a short period of time under the French crown (1343-1355) they finally came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy through the Treaty of Paris . From 1344 the addition Rémens is associated with the place.

Due to its location on the outer border of the county of Savoy, the place was exposed to attacks by French troops under Marshal Biron , and both the 13th century fortress and the village were reduced to rubble and ashes in 1595. With the Treaty of Lyon in 1601, the entire Bugey finally became part of France. From 1576 to 1664 the lands of Saint-Maurice were merged with those of the Marquisate of Varambon .

The parish church of Saint-Maurice belonged to the Archdiocese of Lyon in the Middle Ages , the collature belonged to the abbots of Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey .

Modern times

The post office of Saint-Maurice

In the second half of the 19th century, the parish church was renovated and the bell tower, which had been destroyed since the French Revolution , was replaced. In the decades that followed, municipal facilities such as the village school (1882/3) and the post office (1902) were established. Since 1909 a bridge over the Ain ( Pont de Gévrieux ) has connected the municipality with Châtillon-la-Palud. From 1911 to 1937, the community was the overland tram Tramways de l'Ain connected.

Camp des Fromentaux

In October 1917 - during the First World War - the camp militaire des Fromentaux was established on the territory of the communes of Saint-Maurice, Leyment and Chazey-sur-Ain , an ammunition depot connected to the railway (today the Lyon – Geneva line ). It extends over an area of 116 hectares and comprised 77,000 m 2 of storage area for up to 55,800 t of ammunition. During the Second World War it was occupied first by Italian, then by German troops, and attacked by the English air force in 1944. Barely used any more towards the end of the 20th century, it was closed in 2004 and the security zone drawn in some area was lifted. Left to decay, the Ain department bought the ensemble in 2013 for € 700,000.
