history

The village emerged as Saint-Maurice-d'Anthon around the year 1000 when people settled around a monastery. This is how Charnoz-sur-Ain and Saint-Jean-de-Niost came into being . The church was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. Originally the village was owned by the lords of Anthon on the other side of the Rhone . The hamlets from that time still bear their original names today: L'Orme , Le Zonchet , Le Ronger , Le Content , Le Plan and Pollet . In 1285 the community became a fiefdom of Savoy , which was dependent on the barons of Gourdans . The village, which was alternately dependent on Savoy and Dauphiné , became the property of the Kingdom of France in 1595. The village flourished between 1350 and the 17th century. The autumn market, which attracted people from all over the region, ensured prosperity. The population rose from 245 in 1440 to 1,000 before the French Revolution. Silkworms were also bred in the village for Lyon's needs. There were up to 2857 mulberry trees in the village. After 1870, conflicts over community boundaries and the nearby military camp became problems for the town. In the 1880s there was an economic upswing again, due to the positive development in the Lyon area.
