Ambronay [ ɑ̃.bʁɔ.ne ] is a commune in the Ain department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France . The rural community is about five kilometers north of Ambérieu-en-Bugey , the capital of the canton . Lyon is about 50 kilometers southwest, Bourg-en-Bresse , seat of the prefecture , about 30 kilometers northwest.

history

The Notre-Dame Benedictine Abbey was founded towards the end of the 9th century. During the French Revolution , the abbey was secularized . The abbey church Notre-Dame was parish church and in 1889 as a monument historique classified. The monastery buildings are now the scene of an early music festival .
