geography

location

Douvres is located at 275  m , about 26 kilometers south-southeast of the prefecture of Bourg-en-Bresse , 35 km northwest of the city of Belley and 63 km northwest of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends on the western edge of the historical province of Bugey at the transition between the lower Ain valley and the southern French Jura mountains . Douvres borders the large municipalities of Ambronay in the north and Ambérieu-en-Bugey in the south.

topography

The area of the 5.26 km 2 municipal area comprises a section in the western foothills of the Jura directly below the 805  m high Mont Luisandre . It is divided into a flat area, which belongs to the approximately six kilometers wide valley floor of the lower Ain Valley, and the wooded ascent to Mont Luisandre. The compact settlement area hugs the foot of the mountain below a small incision that was created by the Le Nantay stream . This drains the community soil towards the Ain. On the flank of Mont Luisandre, the municipality reaches its highest point at 480  m . The forests there make up about 44% of the community area. Agricultural areas (24%) and meadows (19%) follow proportionally, with buildings accounting for 13%.

history

Some graves from the Burgundian or Merovingian times were uncovered in 1865. In the Middle Ages there was a small manor in Douvres, which was mentioned in 1227 as Villa de Dolvres . It belonged to a family of the same name, who were obligated to the abbots of Ambronay and from 1346 to the lords of Oncieu (x) . At the time, the Counts of Savoy were the rulers of the Bugey, which became part of France with the Treaty of Lyon in 1601.

Attractions

The village church was built in the 19th century in the neo-Romanesque style and replaced a previous building.

With 1041 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Douvres is one of the small communities in the Ain department. After the population had continuously declined in the 19th and 20th centuries (553 inhabitants were counted in 1851), a strong increase in population began in the mid-1970s, which continues to this day. The locals of Douvres are called Douvrois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Douvres was a predominantly agricultural village. The fields below the village, which are used for grain and protein crops, are cultivated today by a few large farms in Douvres and the neighboring towns. There are also various local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has mainly developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares, but is still well connected to the regional transport network thanks to its proximity to Ambérieu and the junction of the A42 motorway in Château-Gaillard . Several branches of the department road D36 connect the village with the villages in the plain of the Ain valley. A station served by the TER Rhône-Alpes is located in Ambérieu, through which the two lines Lyon – Geneva and Mâcon – Ambérieu run. The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (52 km) and Geneva (103 km).

schools

In Douvres there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
