L'Abergement-de-Varey is a commune of 248 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ain in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Belley and the canton of Ambérieu-en-Bugey and is a member of the Plaine de l'Ain community association .
geography
The municipality is located in the Jura Mountains in the Bugey region , around 50 kilometers northeast of Lyon and just as far southwest of Geneva . Neighboring communities are:
- Jujurieux in the north,
- Boyeux-Saint-Jérôme in the northeast,
- Nivollet-Montgriffon in the southeast,
- Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey in the south,
- Ambronay in the southwest and
- Saint-Jean-le-Vieux in the north-west.
The municipality is drained in a north-easterly direction from the Oiselon river to the Ain ; the Riez runs parallel to it on the northern municipality boundary . L'Abergement-de-Varey is located away from national traffic connections, the village is accessed from the D63 department road.
history
A first written mention of the place under the Latinized name Arbergamentum is from the year 1169. L'Abergement belonged to the rule of Varey in the neighboring parish of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, on which the parish also depended before it became an independent parish in 1808 was raised. In the Middle Ages, the municipality as part of Varey was first under the Lords of Thoire-Villars, until the Counts of Savoy finally took over sovereignty after the death of the last Thoire-Villars . With the Treaty of Lyon , the entire Bugey came to France in 1601.
