The definition of the growing area is therefore almost identical to the appellation Roussette du Bugey . The area in the Département Ain, located south of Seyssel on the orographic right bank of the Rhone , is practically opposite the region known for the Roussette de Savoie , which in turn lies at the height of the Lac du Bourget . On the one hand, the vineyards are spread south of the Revermont nature reserve along the Rhône from Seyssel in the north to Lagnieu. The remaining areas are between the towns of Bourg-en-Bresse in the north and Ambérieu-en-Bugey in the south.

In addition to the simple Bugey, three crus were recognized with stricter regulations:

  • Manicle: the cultivation area is limited to a district that is divided between the two municipalities of Cheignieu-la-Balme and Pugieu.
  • Montagnieu: limited to the municipalities of Briord, Montagnieu, Seillonnaz. This special status applies to still wines and sparkling wines.
  • Cerdon: the definition with the municipalities of Abergement-de-Varey, Bohas-Meyriat-Rignat, Boyeux-Saint-Jérôme, Cerdon, Jujurieux, Mérignat, Poncin, Saint-Alban, Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, and Saint-Martin du-Mont only applies to sparkling wines

Since September 27, 1963, the appellation has had the status of a Vin Delimité de Qualité Supérieur (VDQS for short). The official procedure for the recognition of the area as AOC has been running since April 19, 2008 .

Grape varieties

In general, the yields for red wines are limited to 62 hectoliters / hectare and for white wine and rosé wine to 68 hectoliters / hectare. Stricter rules apply to the 4 crus; here the restriction is 60 hectoliters / hectare or 65 hectoliters / hectare.

The most important red grape varieties for the red and rosé wine are the Gamay , the Mondeuse variety and the Spätburgunder , which is called Pinot Noir in France . The secondary varieties of rosé wine include Pinot Gris and Poulsard . The proportion of secondary varieties in the blend must not exceed the 50% mark but can be 0%. The Bugey Manicle Cru is dedicated to the Pinot Noir variety, while the Bugey-Montagnieu wines are mainly made from the Mondeuse variety.

The main types of white wine are Altesse ( called Roussette here ), Chardonnay , Jacquère , Molette and Mondeuse Blanche . Smaller proportions of the varieties Aligote , Pinot Gris , Pinot Noir and Mondeuse may flow into the Sortenmix.

Before fermentation , the natural minimum sugar content of the must for red wine must be 144 - 153 g / l, which corresponds to an alcohol content of 9–10% by volume in the wine (→ must weight ). For the white wines, the values are 136–153 g / l, with the grape variety being the criterion. For the Crus, the corresponding values are 153–162 g / l for the red wine, while there is no special rule for the white wine. If a chaptalization is approved in bad years , the alcohol content of the finished fermented wine must not exceed 12.5% by volume.

The planting density is at least 5000 vines / hectare. If the topography of the site does not allow this planting density, this minimum value can be corrected to 4500 vines through an exception condition.
