The Altesse white wine has been a grape variety known in the Savoy region since the Middle Ages . It was officially described ampelographically for the first time in 1868. According to legend, the variety is said to have been imported from Cyprus in the 15th century . Louis of Savoy, who married Charlotte de Lusignan , ruler of the island of Cyprus, brought the variety to the French region. Pierre Galet suspects a relationship with the Hungarian grape variety Furmint . Louis Levadoux, another French ampelographer, assigned Altesse to the "famille des Sérines" grape family, which also includes the Syrah , Mondeuse , Viognier , Marsanne blanche and Roussanne varieties . According to this, the variety comes from the south-east of France and could be an autochthonous variety of Savoie.

The late-ripening variety produces an acidic , very fragrant, storable white wine . In Savoy , the appellation wines Roussette de Savoie and Roussette de Seyssel are made from them , and in the VDQS area to the west of Savoy, Vin du Bugey white wine and Roussette du Bugey . If not single-variety , it is blended with the Chardonnay and Mondeuse Blanche varieties . Although the variety produces excellent quality wine , it has not been able to establish itself in other regions due to its poor yield. Currently the area under vines in France is 357 hectares . (Source ONIVINS) A very small population is also known in Switzerland. (0.81 hectare, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG)

In France, clones 265, 403 and 404 are approved for growing quality wines. Altesse is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
