Marsanne blanche

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marsanne blanche (mostly just called Marsanne for short ) is a white wine from the northern Rhône valley . There it is used - often together with Roussanne or Viognier - in the white Hermitage and in the white wines of Saint-Joseph , Coteaux du Tricastin , Côtes du Rhône , Côtes du Rhône Villages , Côtes du Vivarais and Crozes-Hermitage . It is also used in the AOC wines of Corbières , Costières de Nîmes , Coteaux du Languedoc , Faugères , Minervois and Saint-Chinian as well as Cassis . In 2007, the area under vines in France was 1,326 hectares . Louis Levadoux, a French ampelographer, assigned Marsanne to the “famille des Sérines” grape family, which also includes the Syrah , Mondeuse , Viognier, Altesse and Roussanne varieties . Accordingly, the variety would come from the south-east of France.

Further cultivation areas have been Australia ( Victoria ) and the Swiss Rhone Valley since 1860 . In the Swiss canton of Valais , the grape variety is called Ermitage and is a Valais AOC -certified wine. The term “Ermitage” together with the term “AOC Wallis” is considered to be “ Ermitage du Valais ”.

The grape variety is named after the town of Marsanne in the French department of Drôme . The worldwide distribution is estimated at almost 2,000 hectares. The wine made from Marsanne blanche is mostly full and mild, but its aging potential is limited and does not reach that of Roussanne.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The tip of the shoot is very hairy with white wool, with a crimson tinge. The young leaves are slightly hairy and speckled copper-colored.
  • The large and thick leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is closed with the ends overlapping. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set very wide in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cone-shaped grape is medium to large in size, shouldered and loose berries. The round, juicy berries are small to medium-sized and golden-white in color.

The Marsanne grape shoots late and ripens around 20 days after the Gutedel : It is therefore one of the mid-late ripening varieties. It is often attacked by downy mildew and gray mold rot. Against powdery mildew , it is quite resistant. Marsanne is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
