List of grape varieties

The Furmint is an old white wine from Hungary.

origin

It was first mentioned in Hungary in 1623. So far there is no evidence of their origin, but there are many legends . One of the best known is that the vine is said to have been brought to Hungary by Italian immigrants under King Béla IV in the 13th century. Another, somewhat more plausible explanation is that it was brought to the wedding of the Hungarian magnate Ádám Batthyány by the Venetian princess Aurora Formentini in the 17th century .

Ampelographic features

  • The shoot tip is hairy with white wool
  • The shoots are strong.
  • The leaf is large, three-lobed, the edge of the leaf has sharp teeth and the underside is hairy white and velvety.
  • The grapes are very large, elongated, loose berries with juicy, thick-skinned berries with a high sugar content.

Maturity: late

Properties, claims

The variety sprouts quite early, has a vigorous habit, but ripens very late. This results in susceptibility to frost, which means that the vine makes special demands on the climate. The harvest in Hungary usually does not take place until the end of October. The vine is very susceptible to gray mold rot ( Botrytis cinerea ) and powdery mildew ( Oidium tuckeri ). Hardly any demands are placed on the floor. Is only suitable for the best locations. Thrives well on chalky soils and tolerates drought well. Is very susceptible to hayworms and sourworms.

Yield

The yields are high but also very erratic.

Most of the world's cultivation area is in Hungary. The main growing area is the Tokaj wine-growing region ; there he is the bearer of the famous Tokaj . In addition, this vine is traditionally grown in Romania and Croatia. It also attracted particular attention in the Ljutomer wine-growing region (Luttenberg, Slovenia). Recently, vineyards in Austria ( Burgenland , Rust ), where it was again approved as a quality wine variety in 1987, have increased.

Wines

Among the botrytis sweet wines, in addition to the Tokaj , the Ruster Ausbruch is recognized worldwide.

In the past, in addition to extract wines from the Furmint grape, medium-sweet wines of inferior quality were mainly produced. Carefully read and pressed with great expertise, powerful, dry white wines of noble quality and long shelf life can also be achieved with the Furmint. The Tokaj region in particular has made enormous strides in this regard since the early 1990s. It is also worth mentioning that there are very promising attempts to expand the Furmint in barriques and thus, in particular, to integrate the acid structure more harmoniously. Successful wines are rich in extracts, acidic and classy; in the bouquet they sometimes have a light chamomile note and a distinct honey aroma. The color of the wines is a deep golden yellow, their alcohol content is often 13 % by volume and more.
