history

Ljutomer was first mentioned in 1211 as Luetenwerde and the fortifications as Luetenberch in 1249. In 1265 Ljutomer got market rights. The place was hit several times by the plague and the attacks of the Crusaders and the Ottomans. On August 9, 1868, the first people's assembly of the Slovenes took place in Ljutomer, where it was publicly stated for the first time that the Slovene-speaking population wanted their own state.

Ljutomer was bilingual until 1918, in 1880 there were 468 German and 608 Slovenian speakers according to a census; the German-speaking population was forcibly expelled after the Second World War .

Ljutomer is called Lotmerk by the Slovene-speaking population that is still resident. A Slovenian dialect is spoken in the municipality of Ljutomer , which is called "Prleško narečje". The municipality of Ljutomer belongs to the Prlekija region, part of the Pomurje region. The town of Ljutomer is considered by the population to be the capital of the Prlekija area.

Buildings

Ljutomer, church square

The town center of Ljutomer consists of three market squares, one of which is the baroque parish church of John the Baptist shown in the picture .

The two-story town hall on the market is plastered gray and executed in the neoclassic style. It has a wide portal that is built into a risalit , the triangular gable above shows the coat of arms of the first owner family.

economy

Ljutomer is characterized by the breeding of trotter horses that started in centuries past and originally came from Belgium. In addition, pottery , viticulture and cattle breeding including milk processing determine the economy of the place. Several warm springs have been found in the area, which led to the emergence of the Thermenland . In addition, many families practice agriculture and poultry farming, and there are even reports of lignite mining.

A subsidiary of Komptech , the European market leader for machines and systems for the treatment of solid waste and biomass, was built in Ljutomer in 2006 and inaugurated in 2007.

Personalities

- sorted by year of birth -

  • Joseph Johann Knolz (1791–1862), physician and administrative officer, Protomedicus of Lower Austria
  • Stanko Vraz (* 1810 in Ljutomer; † 1851), ethnologist and romantic poet
  • Franc Miklošič (1813–1891), linguist and liberal politician, founder of modern Slavic studies
  • Karel Grossmann , (born October 27, 1864 in Drakovci near Mala Nedelja; † August 3, 1929 in Ljutomer), Slovenian amateur filmmaker and lawyer .
In 1904 he made the first Slovenian film sequence in Ljutomer, the heart of Prlekija. All three films ( Mass in Ljutomer , The End and Leaving Holy Mass and In the House Garden ) can be seen in the Ljutomer Museum.
  • Fritz Lang (1890–1976), director (including Metropolis )
From June to December 1915 Lang received his training as a reserve officer in Ljutomer. Due to his military rank, he lived privately in the house of the aforementioned lawyer Karel Grossmann, a typical intellectual of his time. During this time, Lang also worked in terracotta , inspired by local, traditional pottery. Two of his (self-portrait?) Busts and two garden vases (partly signed and dated) are preserved by the descendants of Karl Grossmann. It is probably Lang's only surviving works of fine art. Later film ideas and motifs for decorating Langs can be traced back to suggestions from Grossmann's library and collections as well as to the architecture and archeology of the town of Ljutomer and its surroundings.
  • Ante Trstenjak (1894–1970), painter
