Stanko Vraz

Stanko Vraz , actually Jakob Fras (born June 30, 1810 in Cerovec (Scherowetz) in Lower Styria , † May 24, 1851 in Agram ), was a poet.

Born as a Slovene, he studied in Graz and initially wrote in his native dialect, but then went over to Croatian Illyrism and became one of the most ardent exponents of it as well as one of the best poets in the Croatian language . After his death he was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb .

Among other things, he published:

  • Djulabije ( love songs , 1840)
  • Gkasi iz dubrave žeravinske (1841)
  • Guslie i tambura (1845)

Since 1841 he has also published the Illyrian magazine Kolo and a valuable collection of folk songs from Styria , Carniola , Carinthia etc. ( Narodne pesme etc., Agram 1839). His collected works appeared in five volumes with the poet's correspondence (Agram 1863–77).
