geography
location
The main town of Gornja Radgona is located on the right bank of the Mur and thus on the border with Austria at around 215 m. ü. A. On the opposite side is Bad Radkersburg ( Slov .: Radgona ), with which it formed a unit until the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919. The Murtal forms a narrow point on this bank side between two wider sections, the western Apaško polje ( Abstaller field ) and the southeast lying Radensko polje ( Radeiner field ), but the largest part of the municipality is in the Slovenske gorice ( Windische Bühel ).
In addition to the Mur, the Ščavnica ( Stainz ) is an important body of water that flows through the municipality from west to south-east. The next larger cities are Murska Sobota, 14 km to the east, and Maribor, 29 km to the west .
Community structure
The municipality comprises 30 localities. The German exonyms in brackets date from the middle of the 19th century and are no longer used today. (Population figures as of January 1, 2017):

history
Once the protective castle of the Styrian town of Bad Radkersburg on the opposite bank of the Mur in Austria, the joint development was interrupted in 1919, when Styria was divided between Austria and Slovenia, and a city center of its own developed. The suburb with the castle built in the Middle Ages is now part of Slovenia.
During the 10-day war in 1991, the community experienced bitter moments when civilian casualties were mourned during the conflict with the Yugoslav army and some buildings were destroyed.
traffic
The national road 3, which runs from Lenart via Gornja Radgona to Križevci , runs through the main town. They allow you to reach the "Lenart" and " Vučja vas " junctions on the A5 motorway. For the districts around the Ščavnica valley there is an inexpensive connection option in " Sveti Jurij ob Ščavnici ".
The railway line coming from Ljutomer ends in Gornja Radgona and is now only used for freight traffic. Originally, this line was a section of the Radkersburger Bahn that led to Spielfeld . However, when Gornja Radgona had to be ceded to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1919 , the rail connection between the two states was no longer necessary. After the end of the Second World War on April 17, 1945, the 2.85 km long section between Radkersburg and Gornja Radgona was finally closed and dismantled including the Mur Bridge. Efforts are currently being made to restore this connection.
