Peter Dajnko
Peter Dajnko (born April 23, 1787 in Črešnjevci , † February 22, 1873 in Velika Nedelja ) was a Slovenian priest, author and linguist. He is considered to be the inventor of the Dajnko alphabet .
Life
Peter Dajnko was born to Berghold Filip Dajnko (Dainko) and Marija Korošec (Koroschetzin) in the village of Črešnjevci near Gornja Radgona in the Habsburg Monarchy . After finishing school in Maribor he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Graz until 1814 . In 1824 he published a new writing system in his textbook on the Windisch language , which was to replace the Slovene variant of the Latin alphabet after Adam Bohorič , the Bohoričica , which had been in use in the Eastern Styrian-Slovenian dialect area since the late 16th century , in order to make his dialect a literary language to raise. His endeavors became obsolete when the orthography ( Gajica ) propagated by Ljudevit Gaj prevailed.
Peter Dajnko died in his homeland, Lower Styria, in 1873.
