history

Big Sunday; Postcard from 1912

On Easter Sunday, April 18, 1199, the battle on the Pettau fields took place here. Friedrich III. von Pettau defeated the Hungarians here, supported by knights of the Teutonic Order , and was thus able to secure his territory as far as Friedau (Ormož). This eastern border with the Kingdom of Hungary lasted until 1918.

As early as 1198 there was a report of a chapel on what would later become the castle hill, which was looked after by the Teutonic Order.

As a thank you for the support, Friedrich III. gave the Teutonic Order the chapel with the order to establish a parish and to secure the area. Thereupon the German rulers set up a commander . The castle was first mentioned in writing in 1273.

The Teutonic Order rose to become the largest landowner in the area through numerous donations. Until the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the order with the Austrian ballot was sovereign; Only Emperor Franz I reinstated the order on March 8, 1843. The order areas were independent again as an imperial fiefdom. Until the end of the First World War, Big Sunday was part of the Marburg district of the Duchy of Styria. Since the foundation of the SHS state at the end of 1918, only the name Velika Nedelja has been used and the village has been assigned to the Ptuj district. Until 1945 the German-speaking part of the population gradually emigrated; In 1945 the remaining German residents were expelled.

In April 1941, Velika Nedelja was occupied by the German Wehrmacht and administratively assigned to the Lower Styria CdZ area . After the Wehrmacht withdrew in 1944, partisans under Tito occupied the area. Since then, Velika Nedelja has belonged to the Ormož municipality.

Culture

The historic core of the village, the castle hill with the castle, chapel and old schoolhouse (today elementary school) is a listed building.

Parish Church of the Holy Trinity

Velika Nedelja (Great Sunday); Trinity Church; Looking east

Today's Church of the Holy Trinity (Slovene: Cerkev Sveta Trojice) stands on the remains of a chapel that was built by the Teutonic Knights before 1199. This chapel consisted of a small barrel-vaulted church tower and an apse . In the first half of the 13th century the church was enlarged by a rectangular chancel. In 1280, probably after the castle was completed, the church was extended and doubled in size. After several renovations, the Romanesque church building was redesigned in baroque style, the church tower was raised and crowned with the typical baroque onion. The eastern part of the church was converted into a Mother of God Chapel in 1770. As is customary for Romanesque churches, the church has a strict west-east orientation.

The oldest part of the church is the baptismal font from 1235; it is the oldest baptismal font in Slovenia. The interior was decorated with frescoes in the 15th century by an unknown artist. The choir stalls were built in during the Baroque renovation in 1685; today's main altar was made by Franz Josef Holzinger in 1770.

The Teutonic Order is still responsible for the parish today .

Monument to Saint Nepomuk

To the west of the church, diagonally across from the primary school, is the St. Nepomuk monument from the mid-16th century.

Folklore collection in the castle

The Folklore Collection of the Ptuj State Museum is located in the Great Sunday Castle as a branch of the Ormož Museum. The collection includes over 900 exhibits from the everyday life of the rural population. The museum is famous for its collection of historical carnival masks. The local history museum of the village and the archive are also housed here.

Kogl

The Kogl farm north of the village at the foot of the Kogl mountain is the oldest still existing winery in Lower Styria. The first records show viticulture since 1542; Until the Austrian land reform in 1848, the landlord was the Teutonic Order. The current building dates from 1860, but the cellars are much older. The entire building complex is a listed building and is registered as a national cultural heritage.
