The International Catholic Office for Education ( English : Catholic International Education Office , Spanish : Oficina Internacional de la Educación Católica , French : Office International de l'Enseignement Catholique , International Abbreviation: OIEC ) is an association of believers recognized by the Holy See . The OIEC was founded in 1952 and works for international Catholic cooperation in the areas of teaching and education .

history

The head of the Dutch office for teaching and education, Monsignore Frans op de Coul , initiated the establishment of an "international office" in Lucerne in November 1950 . Representatives from six Catholic organizations had gathered and established a secretariat. In 1952, with the support of the Archbishop of Utrecht , Cardinal Jan de Jong , the new association was put on a legal basis and recognized papally in 1956. The current non-governmental organization (NGO) is registered with UNESCO , it has advisory status at ECOSOC , UNICEF and the Council of Europe and works with the FAO , OMAEC and the International Catholic Center Geneva (CCIG).

Self-image

The OIEC fulfills an educational mandate in the church , it supports Catholic educational projects and works internationally with governments . Her main focus is on providing a Christian education and training . It continues to work for the freedom of teaching and ensures that Catholic forms of education are adequately represented.

Organization and expansion

The memberships are divided into constituent (legally recognized Catholic educational institutions ), associated (international organizations that are active in education) and cooperating members ( religious communities that are active in education). In addition, there are individual memberships and corresponding members. As the highest body of the OIEC, the General Assembly meets every three years ; it elects the permanent executive body with the Secretary General . The activities are represented by five regional secretaries (Africa, Asia, America, Europe and the Middle East).

The OIEC has 100 constituent, 17 associated, 10 cooperating and 7 corresponding members from 103 countries worldwide. The head office is in Brussels . Germany is represented by the Working Group of Catholic Schools (AKS) and the Secretariat of the German Bishops' Conference - Faith and Education. Among the publications of the OIEC include the series "De la Réflection à l'action" and an information bulletin in French, English and Spanish.
