The organization of former students / inside Catholic institutions ( English : World Organization of former students of Catholic Education ; OMAEC ) is an international association of the faithful in the Roman Catholic Church based in Rome. The OMAEC is an NGO and as such it has an advisory role at UNESCO , ECOSOC , UNICEF and the International Labor Organization (ILO).

history

At the World Eucharistic Congress in Munich in 1960 , Cardinal Augustin Bea SJ (1881–1968) presented his idea of ​​founding an organization for former students of Catholic institutions. The first group included former Jesuit students, and an international study commission will be set up by them. The OMAEC was officially founded in 1976, when it undertook to join the “ International Catholic Office for Teaching and Education ”. In the year it was founded, it was recognized by canon law and was later added to the list of associations and associations of believers under papal law by the Pontifical Council for the Laity . A total of 66 organizations belong to it, in the most varied of forms.

Self-image

The OMAEC defines its primary goal as supporting Catholic students and spreading Christian values . In practical terms, this means that the members are socially committed and promote Christian education in the spirit of the church .

Organization and expansion

The general assembly , which takes place every three years, is the highest body of the OMAEC, at the same time a specialist congress takes place. A management committee (president, 3 vice-presidents, general secretary and deputy, treasurer and deputy) and an executive council are elected from the delegates to the general assembly. In 1987 the permanent "Johannes Commission" was set up. The international association is organizationally divided into UNAEC ( Europe ) and ULAEC ( Latin America and the Caribbean ), its members include 11 international, 12 national and 2 continental organizations and associations that are represented in 30 countries around the world. The organization is headquartered in Rome , its administrative seat is Paris and the seat of the President is Madrid . In addition, associations from 41 countries correspond with the OMAEC, including Germany . Almost 150 million people from different denominations who have been educated and taught in Catholic educational institutions are represented by the OMAEC worldwide .
