The Castle Great Sunday ( Slovenian degree Velika Nedelja ) is a castle above the village of Great Sunday in Slovenia , which the municipality Ormož ( German  Friedau belongs).

history

In the area of today's village Velika Nedelja, the battle on the Pettau fields took place on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1199. Friedrich III. von Pettau defeated the Hungarians here with the support of knights of the Teutonic Order and was able to secure his territory as far as Friedau (Ormož). This eastern border with the Kingdom of Hungary lasted until 1918. As early as 1198 there was a report of a chapel on what would later become the castle hill, which was looked after by the Teutonic Order.

As a thank you for the support, Friedrich III. the Teutonic Order this chapel, which was next to the battlefield, with the order to establish a parish and to secure the area. Friedrich III. von Pettau founded the commander of the Teutonic Order with the Hospital of the Virgin Mary in Pettau around 1210 and gave the knights patronage over this area. The first written mention of the castle comes from the year 1273. The castle belonged to a number of fortifications (including Friedau Castle in Ormož, Meretinzen Castle (Slovene Grad Muretinci ), Pettau Castle, Luttenberg Castle), with which the country against the Hungarians should be protected. The Teutonic Order, known in 1259 as terra Nedelk et Zunk sita inter Drauam et Mura , was administered from the castle .

In 1321 Austrian sources mention the castle as Haus Suntag . The castle chapel of St. Catherine was built until 1410. From 1610 to 1612 the castle was rebuilt and expanded under the Landkomtur Markwart Freiherr zu Eckh and Hungersbach. The Great Sunday Castle was renovated at the beginning of the 18th century. The castle has not been structurally changed since then. From 2007 to 2008 parts of the castle were restored. The castle remained in the possession of the Teutonic Order until the end of the Second World War, after which the castle and the associated lands were nationalized. Since 1991 the castle has belonged to the state of Slovenia.

Since the last renovation in 1612, it has been a baroque four-wing building with small round corner towers. Remnants of the old system still exist in the walls and cellars.

In the north wing of the castle is the originally Gothic and then Baroque castle chapel of St. Catherine. It was designed by Martino Altomonte in 1724. His main work Maria with Saint Florian is now also in the Landesmuseum Pettau (Ptuj), as are the two statues Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara from 1410.

In the castle courtyard, a paw cross is set in front of the baroque wrought-iron fountain as a symbol of the rule of the Teutonic Order. On the north side in the inner courtyard is the coat of arms relief of Commander Markwart Freiherr von Eckh and Hungersbach from 1612, probably the work of the Italian sculptor Philibert Pacobello with the inscription:
