The Radkersburger Bahn is a railway line along the Mur that connects the city of Bad Radkersburg with the Austrian Southern Railway . The line is single-track and not electrified.

history

Establishment

The Radkersburger Bahn was licensed and built by the kk priv. Südbahngesellschaft . The construction did not present any significant problems. The opening of the first section between Spielfeld-Straß and Radkersburg took place on July 12, 1885.

On October 16, 1890, the section from Radkersburg to Luttenberg (now Ljutomer ) was put into operation. Until the takeover of the kk priv. Südbahngesellschaft by the ÖBB , the route was operated by the Südbahngesellschaft.

Division of the route

At the end of the First World War , the southern part of Styria fell to Yugoslavia , which also divided the railway line in km 32.5. In an attempt to stop the Red Army , numerous bridges over the Mur, including those of the Radkersburger Bahn, were destroyed by the Wehrmacht in April 1945 . In contrast to the road bridge, the railway bridge was not rebuilt after the end of the Second World War . Since then, there has been a two and a half kilometer gap in the rail network between Radkersburg and Gornja Radgona / Oberradkersburg . Since then, the end of the route in Austria has been at km 31.095. On the Slovenian part between Gornja Radgona / Oberradkersburg and Ljutomer / Luttenberg there is only freight traffic.

Current meaning

Bad Radkersburg train station

Due to its catchment area, the importance of the Radkersburger Bahn never exceeded a regional railway line and was threatened with recruitment several times.

Securing continuity

In 2006 the course was set for the continued existence of the railway line. Due to the current transport service contract with the state of Styria , after urging the new state government in autumn 2006, in consultation between ÖBB-PV AG and ÖBB-Infrastruktur-Betriebs AG, in some cases extensive renovation work was carried out in various stations and stops. These measures - above all by increasing the platform edges to at least 38 cm - created the prerequisites for the new generation of railcars series 5022 of the ÖBB to be used with the timetable change on December 10, 2006 . In conjunction with the train control operation that had already been set up, this also created the basis for economic management that is intended to ensure the continued existence of this railway line.

In January 2015 a feasibility study for the reconstruction of the railway between Radkersburg and Gornja Radgona was reported. For the construction of this 2.85 km long railway line with a 150 meter long bridge over the Mur, costs of around 20 million euros were stated. In January 2016, the Styrian state parliament formally decided to build the route.

Test drive with a battery powered railcar at the entrance to Spielfeld-Straß

On July 19, 2019, test drives with a battery-powered railcar were carried out on the route to check whether the Radkersburger Bahn is suitable for battery-electric operation. According to the “Neue Radkersburger Bahn” interest group, all direct trains from Graz to Bad Radkersburg would only need two battery-powered railcars. Further trips, also with passengers, are planned. At the end of the year, the train should be tested with a battery powered railcar in regular timetable operation.

S-Bahn Styria

Since the timetable change on December 9, 2007, the route has been S-Bahn Styriareferred to as and is therefore part of the Styrian S-Bahn network .

Appreciation

In 2010 the Austrian Post issued a special postage stamp for 125 years of the Grenzlandbahn Spielfeld-Straß - Bad Radkersburg .
