The Ormož – Hodoš railway is one of the most important lines in the Slovenian railway network. The route leads from Ormož to the border crossing at Hodoš and on towards Hungary to Zalaegerszeg .
history
During the Austro-Hungarian Empire , the line Murska Sobota - Zalalövö was built in 1907 . Since the part from Prekmurje to Murska Sobota fell under Hungarian authority, the Hungarian monarchy built the route to the limit of its legal authority, thus connecting Murska Sobota with the center in Budapest .
During the Kingdom of SHS , a section of the Ljutomer - Murska Sobota line was also built in 1924 . With the establishment of the Prekmurje line, the Muska Sobota - Zalalövö line was connected to the center in Ljubljana , thus simultaneously connecting Slovenia with Budapest.
In 1945, Hungary closed the line between Zalalövö and Hodoš due to reduced traffic. The Budapest - Zagreb - Rijeka line was built. The port of Rijeka became the Hungarian home port and this railway line became more important than the abolished section between Zalalövö and Hodoš. However, the border between Yugoslavia and Hungary became the border of the "Iron Curtain", so that the number of border crossings with Hungary had to decrease at that time. In 1968, Slovenia ended operations on the Murska Sobota - Hodoš line, as did the railway sector due to the rationalization of the railway sector.
The idea of rebuilding the missing section of the line arose shortly after the line was shut down in 1968, when Slovenia and thus the Slovenian economy lost their direct connection to Hungary due to the abolition of the line. The first documents on this subject date from the mid-1970s, while the first study was carried out in 1981 to assess the possibilities of restoring the rail link and the cost-effectiveness of building such a line.
Construction of the new connection officially began on April 30, 1999, when the foundation stone was laid. The line was designed by SŽ - Projektivno podjetje, built by SCT, dd, with partners GIZ Gradis and Primorje, dd signaling and telecommunication devices were designed and installed by Siemens Austria AG. The rails met at the Hodoš border station at the end of September 2000.
The railway line on this section is a single-track electrified line with a length of 43.5 kilometers, of which 24.5 kilometers in Slovenia and 19 kilometers in Hungary. It is equipped with state-of-the-art electronic signaling and telecommunication devices, most of the road crossings are level, i.e. built with underpasses and overpasses and all level crossings are protected by automatic barriers or half barriers . The line allows train speeds of up to 160 km / h and is currently the most modern railway line in Slovenia.
On May 16, 2001, the Slovenian and Hungarian Prime Ministers Janez Drnovšek and Viktor Orban inaugurated the new railway line and thus restored the direct railway connection between the two countries. The first trains ran on the new line immediately after it opened on May 17, 2001.
The Puconci - Hodoš section was the last missing section of the Lyon - Milan - Venice - Ljubljana - Budapest - Kiev transport corridor and has been part of the TEN T 6 Almeria - Valencia - Lyon - Milan - Venice - Ljubljana - Budapest - Zahonie since 2010. It is an integral part of the Slovenian railway network Koper / Sežana - Ljubljana - Pragersko - Hodoš and connects northern Italy, the port of Koper and Slovenia with Central and Eastern Europe.
