Slovenska Bistrica ( German : Windisch-Feistritz ; cf. Deutschfeistritz ) is a small town and municipality in Slovenia . It is located in the historical Spodnja Štajerska ( Lower Styria ) region and in the statistical region of Podravska .
geography
location
The town of Slovenska Bistrica is located in the south-western corner of Dravsko polje ( Draufeld ) on the way from Maribor to Ljubljana . Maribor is about 20 km to the north. With an area of around 260 km², the municipality is one of the larger in the region and accordingly comprises a lot of the surrounding area. About two thirds is taken up by the sparsely populated Pohorje ( Bachern Mountains ). The highest point is the Rogla with 1517 m. i. J. , which is located in the far northwest.
Community structure
The municipality comprises 79 localities. The German exonyms in brackets were mainly used by the German-speaking population until the area was ceded to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918 and are largely uncommon today. (Population figures as of January 1, 2017):

history
Windischfeistritz received city rights in the 1290s from the Styrian sovereigns. Until well into the 20th century, Deutschfeistritz was a predominantly German-speaking city with a Slovenian region. In the 1900 census, 729 of the 1252 inhabitants gave German and 493 Slovene as the colloquial language.
Attractions
Slovenska Bistrica is one of the oldest cities in Slovenia. The Windischfeistritz Castle, which dominates the entire western part of the old town, is particularly worth seeing. This castle emerged from a castle that was first mentioned in 1311. In the 16th century it belonged to the cousin von der Lilie . After renovations, especially from 1623 to 1651, the castle was given the character of a castle. The current form came from the Attems family (1717–1945). Today there is also a museum there, including a memorial room for Anton Ingolič .
traffic
Slovenska Bistrica is located directly on the A1 motorway . In the municipality there are two junctions Slovenska Bistrica-sever ( Slovenska Bistrica-Nord ), which is located a little north of the city, and Slovenska Bistrica-jug ( Slovenska Bistrica-South ), which leads directly to the city center.
In addition, the railway line from Zidani Most to Šentilj runs through the commune and is connected to it by two railway stations. The more important of the two is Pragersko in the town of the same name. This is a junction station from which the railway branches off towards Ormož and thus towards Čakovec and Budapest , which means it is used as an intercity stop. The second station is Slovenska Bistrica . Despite the name, it is about 4 km out of town in a field, which makes it much less attractive for passenger traffic.
