Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure , VDQS (German: "Higher quality wines from a limited growing area") is a French quality designation for wines.
These wines roughly correspond to the German quality wines from certain growing areas . The wine must come 100% from the specified area of origin. Qualitatively they are the AOC - wines not in wait, although you in the hierarchy often a quality level attaches deeper the French wines. The VDQS represents a preliminary stage to the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, many former VDQS have now made the rise to AOC wine.
In France there are still around 30 VDQS names with various sub-names (places, locations, types of wine) in Lorraine , Burgundy , Savoy , Provence , in the Loire Valley ( Loire wine-growing region ), Languedoc-Roussillon , in the Côtes du Rhône ( Rhône wine-growing region ), and south west France . These are usually quite small, little-known wine-growing areas with low production.
