The Coteaux d'Ancenis wine-growing region is part of the Pays Nantais and thus the Loire wine-growing region . Since January 22, 1954 (the last change to the decree was made on November 17, 1983), the area has the status of a Vin Delimité de Qualité Supérieur (VDQS for short). The wine-growing region is located on the orographic left and right of the Loire near the city of Nantes . An average of 17,500 hectoliters of wine are harvested annually on a vineyard area of around 260 hectares .

Approved vineyards are located in the municipalities of Mauges-sur-Loire and Orée d'Anjou in the Maine-et-Loire department and the municipalities of Ancenis , Le Cellier , Couffé , Divatte-sur-Loire , Ligné , Loireauxence , Mauves-sur-Loire , Mésanger , Mouzeil , Oudon , Saint-Géréon , Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire , Teillé , Thouaré and Vair-sur-Loire in the Loire-Atlantique department .

In the south the area borders on the appellation Muscadet Sèvre et Maine . Geographically, the area is almost congruent with the Muscadet-Coteaux de la Loire appellation . The fresh white wines of the region are primarily marketed under this name.

To produce the dry red wines and rose wines are varietals Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon , Gamay and dyers grape Gamay de Chaudenay and Gamay de Bouze admitted. The proportion of dye grapes must not exceed 5%. Before fermentation , the natural minimum sugar content (→ must weight ) of the must must be 144 g / l (for rosé wine 136 g / l), which corresponds to an alcohol content of 9% by volume in the wine. If a chaptalization is approved in bad years , the alcohol content of the finished fermented wine must not exceed 12.5% by volume (for rosé wine 12% by volume).

Gamay predominates in cultivation. The red and rosé wines are usually aromatic and fruity. Aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry can be heard in the wine. The wines should be enjoyed young at a drinking temperature of 15-16 ° C.

In addition to the red wines, a very small amount of white wines is made from the grape varieties Chenin Blanc and Pinot Blanc (often called Malvoisie here).

The yield has been limited to 40 hl / ha since 1960.
