The wine region of Saint-Pourçain belongs - in spite of the distance of more than 40 kilometers - to the great wine-growing region Loire (AOC) . Since May 28, 2009 the area has the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). Saint-Pourçain was previously classified as a VDQS on December 20, 1951 .

The Saint-Pourçain wine-growing region is located south or south-west of the city of Moulins , about 30 to 50 kilometers (driving distance) north of Clermont-Ferrand on the left bank of the River Allier in the north of the Auvergne in central France. Saint-Pourçain is located north of the Côtes d'Auvergne appellation and west of the Côtes du Forez and Côte Roannaise appellation .

Wine

The vineyards currently cover 543 hectares in 19 communities. The areas are located at an altitude of 240 to 320  m in the valleys of the Sioule , Allier and Bouble rivers and extend over a length of almost 35 km and a maximum width of 5-7 km.

The dry red wines are made as a blend of the grape varieties Gamay (min. 40% share) and Pinot Noir (min. 25% share). Until the late 1960s, the use of Gamay de Bouze and Gamay de Chaudenay dye grapes was still allowed. The harvest restriction is 50 hectoliters / hectare. The minimum alcohol content is a low 9 percent by volume and must not exceed 12.5% in the case of chaptalization . The ruby-red, fruity wines should be drunk within 3–5 years of harvesting. The drinking temperature should be 15–17 ° C.

The rosés are sorted pressed from Gamay. Their optimal drinking temperature is 10 ° C.

The dry white wines are made as a blend of the grape varieties Chardonnay (min. 50% share) and Tressalier (min. 40% share). Small additions of Sauvignon Blanc are permitted. The use of the Saint-Pierre Doré variety was still allowed until the late 1960s . The straw yellow wines should be drunk within two to three years of harvesting. The drinking temperature should be 10–12 ° C.
