Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule is a French commune with 5,160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Allier department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . It is part of the Moulins arrondissement and the seat of the Saint-Pourçain Sioule Limagne municipal association .
The area around Saint-Pourçain is known for the wine grown here , the Saint-Pourçain (AOC) .
geography
The small town is located about 25 kilometers northwest of Vichy , near the confluence of the Bouble in the Sioule , which flows a few kilometers north into the Allier .
history
Origin of name
The city is named after St. Portian (Pourçain, died around 532), a freed slave who became a monk and stood up for the population suffering from the attacks of the Merovingian king Theuderic I.

There are several state and church schools in Saint-Pourçain.
Among them, the Lycée and Collège Blaise de Vigenère is the educational institution with the largest number of students. Since 2005 there has been a school partnership with the Ortenburg-Gymnasium in the Bavarian town of Oberviechtach , with which a joint student exchange is carried out every year .
