Ygrande is a French municipality with 775 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Allier in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Moulins and the canton of Bourbon-l'Archambault .

The municipality of Ygrande is located in the Bocage Bourbonnais countryside , about 30 kilometers west of Moulins , on the watershed between the Bieudre ( Allier river system ) and the Aumance ( Cher river system ).

history

Ygrande is now at an important road junction, at the place where, in early history, a nomad tribe settled near a well. The name Ygrande comes from the Gauls, when the village was on the border between the Bituringen ( Berry ) and the Arvernern ( Auvergne ).

In the extensive area of ​​Ygrande you will find the castle of Pont-Lung (end of the 15th century), the manor house of la Grolière (1613), the castle of Ygrande (1836), the chapel of Saint-Roch (17th century) and the Saint-Martin church (12th and 13th centuries) in Romanesque-Burgundian style, overlooked by a high church tower with a stone roof. The church is classified as a Monument historique in the Base Mérimée , the database of the French Ministry of Culture.

A tradition in Ygrande is the carnival, which has been celebrated in the town since 1930.

Economy and Infrastructure

Cattle breeding with its numerous farms is still the main occupation in the region today. Cattle breeding is particularly widespread here. But tourism has also noticeably gained influence in recent years. Today it is mainly Dutch, English and German who spend their holidays in the Auvergne countryside.

Personalities

The writer and farmer Emile Guillaumin (born 1873 and died 1951 in Ygrande) has had a strong impact on local history since then. He is popularly known as the "sage of Ygrande". A museum in Ygrande is dedicated to his humanistic, journalistic and literary activities.
