The Calyceraceae are a family in the order of the aster-like (Asterales). In this family there are four to six genera and about 40 species with a purely Neotropical distribution; all species have their areas in South America. Most of the species grow in the Andes .
description
Species of the Calyceraceae are annual or perennial herbaceous plants . The alternate leaves are simple or pinnate. In some species the leaves are in basal rosettes. The leaf margins are whole. Stipules are missing.
There are taxa with hermaphroditic as well as taxa with unisexual flowers; male and female flowers sit on one plant, so they are monoecious, separate sexes ( monoecious ). The flowers stand alone or in mostly cephalic or rarely racemose inflorescences (inflorescences). The small flowers are usually five-fold (rarely four or six-fold) and radial symmetry to weakly zygomorphic . The two bract circles are clearly different. The sepals end in thorns in many species. The petals are fused in a tube. There is only one circle with mostly five (rarely four or six) free fertile stamens . The stamens are fused with the upper part of the corolla tube. Sometimes one is just carpel available, mostly two carpels are one under constant ovary grown. There is a stylus and a scar. Pollination occurs by insects ( entomophilia ). There are achänenähnliche formed fruits, they are crowned by the remains of calyx and corolla.
