Le Theil is a central French town and municipality with 404 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Allier department in the north of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region .

location

The place Le Theil is located in the fertile and wooded cultural landscape of the Bourbonnais at an altitude of about 450 meters above sea level. d. M. The town of Moulins is about 42 kilometers (driving distance) to the southwest; the health resort of Vichy is only about 40 kilometers southeast and the city of Clermont-Ferrand is about 92 kilometers south. The still agriculturally oriented community also includes several individual farms.

In the 19th century the number of inhabitants increased from around 1000 to over 1250 people; Due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants in the municipality then fell continuously to the lows of the last few decades.

For centuries, the residents of Le Theil lived as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which also included viticulture; in addition there were regional retail trade and handicrafts. During the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century came the viticulture temporarily ground to a halt, but are now being produced again red, rosé and white wines on the appellation de Val Loire ' are marketed. Some of the vacant houses in the village have been converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

Little is known about the history of the place; the Romanesque church with its late Gothic pointed helmet, however, suggests the presence of a medieval priory , which was dissolved long before the French Revolution .

  • The former priory church and today's parish church of Saint-Martin was probably built in the late 11th century; the old eastern parts were torn down in the 12th century and replaced by a three apsidial transept and choir area . The steeply towering pointed stone helmet ( flèche ) of the crossing tower , accessible via an external staircase, belongs to the 14th century. The church has two entrance portals - a simple one on the west and a more richly designed one on the south side. The three-aisled interior of the church consists of a barrel-vaulted central nave, which is only 3.50 meters wide, and two even narrower aisles with quarter -barrel vaults . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1927 .
Château du Max
  • Which consists of a housing unit ( corps de logis ) having a laterally adjoining stair tower existing main building of the Château de Fontariol ( 46 ° 22 '1 "  N , 3 ° 6' 56"  O ) was created in the 15th century belonged to a gentry family ; it is surrounded by several farm buildings from a later period. The landlords chateau ( manor ) is privately owned and as since 2010 Monument historique classified.
  • The Château du Max , which dates largely from the 15th century, is now partially used as a stylishly furnished country hotel.
