Montbeugny is located in the north of the Auvergne in the historic Bourbonnais province about 14 kilometers southeast of the city center of Moulins . Montbeugny is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Lusigny in the north, Thiel-sur-Acolin in the east, Chapeau in the south, Neuilly-le-Réal in the southwest, Toulon-sur-Allier in the west and Moulins in the northwest.

The Moulins-Montbeugny airfield is located to a small extent in the western municipality. Route nationale 79 runs through the south of the municipality .
