history
The ancient settlement of Bourbon was in the settlement area of the Biturigen . This city is listed as Aquae Bormonis on the Tabula Peutingeriana . In the Middle Ages, the place was the capital of the Lords of Bourbon , nine of whom were given the first name Archambault between the 10th and 12th centuries. Due to the marriage of Beatrix of Burgundy in 1276 to Robert de Clermont , a son of the French king Louis the Saint , the castle and rule passed to a younger line of the Capetians who had been named Duke of Bourbon (also called House of Bourbon ) since 1327 , which in 1589 replaced the older line of Valois as the ruling dynasty in France. In the 15th century, the Bourbons moved their headquarters to the castle in Moulins . The castle ruin Bourbon-l'Archambault today belongs to the Bourbon line House Orléans .
Bourbon became an important fortress, equipped with 15 towers, and in use until the 15th century. In the 17th century, thermal springs were discovered that are still in use today. In the 19th century the fortress was almost completely demolished. Only three towers were left standing at the urging of the poet Achille Allier .
