Chareil-Cintrat is a central French municipality with 358 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Allier department in the north of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region .
location
The nearby and formerly independent towns are located about 500 meters from the Bouble river in the fertile and wooded landscape of the Bourbonnais at an altitude of about 280 meters above sea level. d. For centuries the residents of Chareil and Cintrat , who were mostly dependent on the priory , lived as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which also included viticulture; in addition there were regional retail trade and handicrafts. During the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century, viticulture came to a complete standstill, but red, rosé and white wines are now being produced again and are marketed through the appellations 'Saint-Pourçain' and 'Val de Loire' . Some of the vacant houses in the village have been converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
The remains of a Gallo-Roman country estate ( villa rustica ) have been discovered in the area of today's municipality . The Romanesque church of Chareil was built in the Middle Ages and was used as a barn ( grange ) for a long time after the French Revolution . In 1830 the two places were merged into one municipality.

- The parish church of Saint-Blaise is an outwardly completely inconspicuous building from the 12th century, whose apse and crossing tower were destroyed during and after the French Revolution. - The Château du Bas-Chareil is located in the immediate vicinity of Chareil. It has medieval origins, but the current appearance of the main building with the residential wing ( corps de logis ) and two round towers at the sides essentially goes back to the mid-16th century - all components show the cross-frame windows that have been common since the Renaissance . Some outbuildings can be assigned to the 18th century. The construction was added to the list of Monuments historiques in 1958 .
