Johannes Kerstan

Johannes Kerstan (born August 31, 1926 in Chemnitz ; † July 21, 1997 in Wolfsburg-Unkeroda ) was a German mathematician.

Life

After graduating from high school, Johannes Kerstan studied mathematics at the University of Leipzig from 1946 to 1951 . In 1955 he received his doctorate at the Humboldt University in Berlin with the thesis supervised by Kurt SchröderA set-algebraic principle and its application to functional analysis and topology ”. 1960 also followed the habilitation at the Humboldt University. In 1962 he was appointed full professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . After working on algebra , association theory and topology , from the second half of the 1950s he dealt with topics of probability theory and stochastics , first at the Institute for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and then at the University of Jena.

Several of his important works on probability and statistics were created in collaboration with Klaus Matthes . They made the theory of point processes an internationally respected priority area. Together they were in 1971 in a collective with the National Prize of the GDR III. Class excellent.

In 1977 Kerstan was elected a corresponding and in 1981 a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR. In 1977 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze. In 1987 he was honored with the title of Honored University Professor of the GDR . He was a member of the Leibniz Society .
