The Loire wine region. The Côte Roannaise appellation is at the bottom right of the map.

The appellation Côte Roannaise is located west of the municipality of Roanne , about 70 km northwest of Lyon on the orographic left bank of the Loire River in central France. It therefore belongs to the large Loire wine-growing region . Côte Roannaise is located north of the Côtes du Forez appellation and east of the Saint-Pourçain and Côtes d'Auvergne appellation .

The Côte Roannaise was classified as an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) on February 14, 1994 .

The vineyards currently (as of 2008) cover 220 hectares of vineyards in 14 communities. The areas are located at an altitude of 350- 550  meters on slopes of the Monts de la Madeleine . This mountain range, assigned to the Massif Central , separates the river valleys of the Loire and Allier and protects the area from humid air masses from the west.

The dry red wines are sorted from the grape variety Gamay grapes. The harvest restriction is 55 hectoliters / hectare. The minimum alcohol content is a low 9.5 percent by volume and must not exceed 12.5% in the case of chaptalization . The ruby red, fruity wines should be drunk within 2–5 years after harvest. The drinking temperature should be 15–17 ° C.

The rosé wines are also made from single varieties from Gamay. Their optimal drinking temperature is 10 ° C.

The dry white wines of the region are marketed as Vin de Pays d'Urfé , as white wines have not been included in the appellation's rules.
