The Jasnières wine-growing region is an enclave in the northeast of the Coteaux du Loir area in the Loire wine-growing region . The area is about 40 km north of the city of Tours and thus north of the Touraine area . Further east is the Coteaux du Vendômois wine-growing region . The Jasnières appellation has enjoyed AOC status since July 31, 1937 .

Growing area

The vineyards with around 61 hectares of vineyards are located north of the Loir river on its orographic right side on loamy limestone soil with flint inclusions . The disrupted limestone pedestal is from the era of the Turonian and Tuff called. The approximately four kilometers long and only a few hundred meters wide area on the hillside with ideal south orientation is the best section (cru location) of the Coteaux du Loir area. The vineyards are divided between the municipalities of Lhomme and Ruillé-sur-Loir . The area takes its name from the hamlet of Jasnières halfway between the two communities. The area is one of the northernmost in the Loire wine-growing region. The nearby Forêt de Bercé forest protects the climate from the cold northern air.

The wine-growing area is divided into the 25 hectare Clos de Jasnières vineyard in Lhomme and areas in the Vallée de la Veuve in Ruillé-sur-Loire. In this valley, however, of the potentially 400 hectares of approved vineyards, only about 40 hectares are used. The area was almost forgotten in the 1960s. The low point was reached in 1968 with a harvest of 67 hl.

Extension and expansion

Only a very long-lived white wine made from the grape variety Chenin Blanc (also called Pineau de la Loire here ) is made, which is usually dry, even if the berries are attacked by the noble rot Botrytis cinerea . Sweet wines are only made in very warm years.

The density of vines is 5500 vines per hectare, the maximum permitted yield is 52 hl / ha; an amount that can be corrected up to 63 hl / ha depending on the year. The bleed is very low and is strictly regulated. In 2002, 2240 hectoliters of wine were pressed.

Tasting Notes

The wine can be stored for at least 15 years, but usually for several decades, and should be enjoyed at a drinking temperature of 9 to 11 ° C.

The wine is bright, yellow in color and has floral and fruity aromas with a mineral note. More mature wines get additional aromas of dried fruits and honey. In particularly good years, sweet wines are produced that can withstand comparison with other sweet wines from the Loire region.
