Pouilly fumé
Pouilly-Fumé is a famous French region of origin for white wine . It is a Loire wine made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape variety , whose name fumé ( French smoked ) comes from the geology of the growing area, where there are flints that develop sparks and smoke when they are struck .
Excellent wines allow this flint tone to be understood in the bouquet and taste. The other part of its name comes from the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . Since July 31, 1937, the area has the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC).
Pouilly-Fumé is located southeast in the extended axis of the areas of Sancerre and Menetou-Salon . Pouilly-Fumé is part of the Loire wine-growing region . The growing area extends over the communes of Garchy , Mesves-sur-Loire , Pouilly-sur-Loire, Saint-Andelain , Saint-Laurent-l'Abbaye , Saint-Martin-sur-Nohain , Boisgibault and Tracy-sur-Loire des Départements Nièvre . The annual harvest is 70,000 hectoliters of wine.
Pouilly-Fumé should not be confused with Pouilly-sur-Loire from Chasselas (Gutedel), which is produced in the same area but has a different character, and also not with Pouilly-Fuissé , Pouilly-Loché and Pouilly-Vinzelles . All three are Chardonnay wines from the Burgundy region .
