Pouilly-Fuissé
Pouilly-Fuissé is an important appellation d'Origine Contrôlée for white wine in Mâconnais , Burgundy . At the foot of the famous Solutré rock are the villages of Solutré-Pouilly , Fuissé , Chaintré and Vergisson . The rocky cliffs of Solutré and Vergisson mark the end of a limestone plateau on which all grape varieties permitted in Burgundy grow with the exception of Gamay , which occurs in Beaujolais .
The full-bodied wines of the area are made from Chardonnay vines. Wines matured in oak barrels can still mature well in the bottle and are later reminiscent of roasted almonds and hazelnut aromas. Otherwise the wines are very fresh and very floral. Due to their popularity, especially in the United States, these wines reach a price level similar to that of a Chablis .
The Pouilly-Fuissé should not be confused with the Pouilly-Fumé , a Loire wine made from Sauvignon Blanc .
