Pouilly-sur-Loire is a commune with 1,636 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) and an area of 20.28 square kilometers in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . The place is located on the right bank of the Loire , eleven kilometers southeast of Sancerre at an altitude between 143 and 244 m above sea level. The bridge over the Loire marks exactly half the length of the Loire.

Since 1861, the municipality has a railway station on the railway line Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache which trains of TER Bourgogne Franche-Comté the connection Cosne-sur-Loire - Nevers is operated.
Viticulture
The approximately 650 hectare cultivation area with unusual south and south-west locations on less calcareous soil than z. B. in Sancerre is mainly planted with Chasselas and Sauvignon Blanc -Fumé, whereby Sauvignon Blanc has now replaced the Chasselas grape somewhat. Wines made from the Chasselas grape come on the market as Pouilly-sur-Loire , while the higher quality wines made from Sauvignon Blanc are sold as Pouilly-Fumé and enjoy great popularity all over the world.
history
Pauliaca Villa , as the place was called earlier, is mentioned as early as the 5th century. In the 7th century, the place was placed under the protection of Vigile, Bishop of Auxerre , who belonged to the priory of the Charité-sur-Loire. This in turn was dependent on the Cluny Abbey . Viticulture was founded in Pouilly by the Benedictines .
