Châteauneuf-Val-de-Bargis is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Sainte-Colombe-des-Bois in the north and north-west, Cessy-les-Bois in the north, Saint-Malo-en-Donziois in the north and north-east, Champlemy in the east, Dompierre- sur-Nièvre in the southeast, Arbourse in the south, Nannay in the south and southwest and Vielmanay in the west.
