Via Lemovicensis

The historic Camino de Santiago in France

Via Lemovicensis (French: Voie limousine or Voie de Vézelay ) is the Latin name of one of the four Camino de Santiago in France . In 1998, UNESCO named these “ Paths of the Pilgrims to St. James in France ” a World Heritage Site .

Pilgrimage

Via Lemovicensis runs through Limoges , hence the name, but the meeting and starting point is Vézelay with its Abbey de la Madeleine.

On its first section, this Camino de Santiago has two variants: north via La Charité-sur-Loire with the Church of Notre-Dame , Bourges and Châteauroux , south via Nevers , Châteaumeillant and the collegiate church of Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre . Both unite in Gargilesse-Dampierre on the Creuse .

From there, Via Lemovicensis leads southwest via Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat , Limoges and Périgueux . At Sainte-Foy-la-Grande it crosses the Dordogne , at La Réole the Gironde , and a day's stage to Mont-de-Marsan at the Abbey of Saint-Sever the Adour . In the Basque Ostabat it meets the Via Turonensis ( coming from Tours ) and the Via Podiensis ( coming from Le Puy-en-Velay ).

Under the name Via Podiensis, it leads to Spain at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port over the Col de Roncevaux . The name Camino navarro is then used up to Puente la Reina . This is where the fourth French Way of St. James, the Via Tolosana (with the Pyrenees crossing over the Col du Somport ) joins. Both branches and their joint continuation to Santiago de Compostela are also World Heritage Sites as Camino Francés .

The French long-distance hiking trail GR 654 is similar in its course to the Via Lemovicensis. Between Vezelay and Varzy, it first follows the northern historical route, but then turns and follows the southern variant from Nevers. After Périgueux, he then takes a more easterly route via Bergerac to Montréal-du-Gers , where he meets the Via Podiensis .

The Association de Coopération Interrégionale Les Chemins Saint-Jacques de Compostelle defines the northern and southern routes partly differently. Then the northern path turns south in Neuvy-Pailloux : Ardentes - Neuvy-Saint-Sépulchre - Cluis - Éguzon-Chantôme - Gargilesse-Dampierre and further on the common path. The southern route is described in such a way that from Saint-Amand-Montrond it bypasses the Indre department to the south, crosses the Creuse south of Guéret and only meets the main route at Saint-Laurent-les-Églises .

Between Bazas and Mont-de-Marsan there is also the following variant:

Bazas - Lencouacq - Cachen - Maillères - Canenx-et-Réaut - Lucbardez-et-Bargues - Saint Avit - Mont-de-Marsan
