Audignon is a French municipality with 395 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and the canton of Chalosse Tursan (until 2015: canton of Saint-Sever ).

The name in the Gascognic language is Audinhon . The inhabitants are called Audignonais and Audignonaises .

geography

Audignon is about 20 km south of Mont-de-Marsan in the Chalosse region in the historical province of Gascony .

Audignon lies in the catchment area of the Adour River .

One of its tributaries, the Gabas , marks the northern border with the neighboring municipality of Saint-Sever. The Ruisseau de Laudon, a tributary of the Gabas, crosses the area of the municipality as does its tributary, the Ruisseau de Pascouaou.

history

The history of Audignon goes back to the Paleolithic . It was first mentioned in the scriptures in the 13th century, when the village had a hospital that was also the seat of a commandery because it was on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela . In September 1441 the village was sacked and set on fire by troops led by Charles II. D'Albret and the Viscount of Lomagne in the hope of driving out the English who occupied it. The hospital was destroyed by Protestant troops in the Huguenot Wars in 1569 . In the 17th century, Audignon was transformed into a bastide . The limestone quarry created a certain wealth in the community. In order to cushion the move after its closure, soil examinations were carried out for indications of deposits of crude oil, which were in vain.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 640 residents by the first half of the 19th century. As a result, the population shrank by the 1870s to a level of around 500 inhabitants, which was maintained until the First World War . In the following years the size decreased again with short recovery phases up to the 1970s to around 290 inhabitants before a growth phase began that continues today.

Parish Church of Notre-Dame

Parish Church of Notre-Dame

The church has been classified as a Monument historique since May 12, 1975 . At the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century, a nave with a nave with large arches for relief and a semicircular Romanesque apse were built. It is believed that a group of Benedictine monks from Saint-Sever realized the first stage of the church. The earlier church, which may have been made of wood, had burned down beforehand.

Fortification elements were added in the 14th century. The apse was raised for a guardroom and a massive defense tower was added to the west above the entrance. Next to the main tower a tourelle with internal stairs was built. Tower and Tourelle feature a polygonal helmet covered in stone. The tower's helmet has been embellished with Gothic crabs on the protruding edges. The Gothic entrance portal , which is protected by the entrance porch , was built during the same period . Following the shape of the pointed arch , the portal consists of five archivolts equipped with rollers without any other decorations, which continue in the garment , where capitals separate the archivolts from columns . The capitals form a frieze on each side and are decorated with plant motifs, animal figures, grotesque masks and people in strange positions.

The south aisle was added in 1550 and the north aisle dates from the 18th century. The apse with two buttresses , however, retained its Romanesque architecture. The defense tower was converted into a bell tower.

The triumphal arch of the apse is supported by two capitals. In the apse, a cornice is supported by consoles that illustrate various motifs, such as Roland blowing his horn or Christ blessing . Two columns show ornate capitals from which the scenes " Daniel in the lions' den" and "The pelican and his cubs" can be recognized.

The altarpiece of the main altar is made of limestone and dates from the 15th century. It was discovered in 1963 by the then pastor Rousseau von Audignon behind a gilded wooden retable from the 18th century that had previously covered it. It stretches over 10 m² and the limestone certainly comes from the area's former quarries. It consists of a series of arcades on two levels of small dimensions, behind which frescoes have been applied. On the lower level these illustrate the childhood of Jesus and his crucifixion , on the upper level apostles , prophets and saints are depicted. Pastor Rousseau noted three successive coats of paint, an indication of several restorations over the centuries. In the middle between the arcades a fresco can be seen, which presumably depicted plant motifs, but which has faded completely over time. In the middle of the reredos is a modern Madonna with baby Jesus .

In the back of the south aisle, the retable is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dates from the 18th century. The pastor Mathieu de Marsan commissioned to two artists from Saint-Sever, 1724 the carver Chadel and 1726 the gilder Dutour. The antependium in front of the former main altar was made in 1761 and is made of leather from Cordoba . In the center there is a painting illustrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary .

Captan Castle

Captan Castle

In 1887 the Galard-Rochetaillé family commissioned the landscape architect Édouard André to rebuild the castle, which was originally built in the 14th century. The work lasted from 1891 to 1894. For the interior, he teamed up with the architect Garros from Bordeaux . A park system designed by Édouard André was not implemented. A striking feature of the castle are its four corner pavilions . The property, also known as Galard Castle, has been classified as a Monument historique since September 11, 1997 . It is privately owned and not open to the public.

traffic

Audignon can be reached via Routes départementales 21, 78 and 933S, the former Route nationale 133 .

A railway line operated by the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi connected Saint-Sever with Hagetmau . On the single-track, non-electrified line, which went into operation in 1910, Audignon was provided with a stop. Since 1938, the route has only been used by freight trains.
