Lauret is a French municipality with 85 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and the canton of Chalosse Tursan (until 2015: canton of Geaune ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is also Lauret . Its origin is unclear. It could come from the Gascon tèrra laurada ( German  ordered field ) or the Gascon laur ( German  laurel ).

The inhabitants are called Laurétois and Laurétoises .

Lauret is located about 40 km south of Mont-de-Marsan in the Tursan region of the historic Gascogne province on the southern border with the neighboring Pyrénées-Atlantiques department .

At 237 m, the municipality has the highest point in the department.

history

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 325 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 70 inhabitants with brief recovery phases by the 1990s, before a moderate growth phase began that is now still going on.

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The church dedicated to John the Baptist was built in 1889. Your building has a choir in a semicircular apse and a nave with a nave and an adjacent aisle to the north. The apse, with its visible, regular masonry connection, forms a contrast to the otherwise plastered facade of the church. The bell tower above the vestibule is equipped with twin arched windows on each side and a polygonal, slate- covered helmet .
