history

The order of the Poor Clares in Mont-de-Marsan owned an extensive fiefdom in Estigarde in the Middle Ages . The community was on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela . The Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era were dominated by the clashes between English and French troops in the Hundred Years War , in the wake of the Huguenot Wars . The Gabardan region, in which the municipality is located, was located between French possessions and those of the English House of Plantagenet . Subsequently, fighting between Protestant and Catholic troops rocked the region. In the 19th century, the cultivation of pine trees and the extraction of tree sap began , which became the main sources of income for the community until the Second World War . The great forest fires of 1945 and 1949 led the residents to farming, and tree sap extraction was gradually abandoned. Due to the drainage of the swamps, the cultivation area could be doubled in the 1950s, especially for maize cultivation.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 325 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 75 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the turn of the millennium, before a moderate growth phase began.

Parish Church of Saint-Laurent

The earlier church, built in the Middle Ages, was under the order of the Poor Clares. It was looted and set on fire in 1569 by Protestant troops led by Captain Thoiras. Today's church was rebuilt in the years 1892 and 1893 in neo-Gothic style and with a floor plan of a Latin cross . The single-nave nave with a length of one yoke is extended to the west by another yoke of the vestibule below the bell tower . This is flanked by a baptistery in the north and a staircase to the gallery in the south. Two side chapels open to the crossing . The rectangular choir is framed by two sacristies . The nave and the chapels are covered with false groin vaults, the choir with false ribbed vaults . The long building is covered with tiles, the hexagonal spire of the bell tower with slate .

Today's church has received only a few elements from the furnishings of the earlier church, such as a censer from the first half of the 17th century, a baptismal font probably from the 17th century, a holy water font from the 18th century and a lecture cross from the 17th century . or 18th century. All items date from 1569, the time it was looted by Protestant troops in the Huguenot Wars.

Eight stained glass windows are works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux , which were created in 1893 when today's church was being built. In addition to geometric representations, they show the following biblical people, motifs and symbols:

The neo-Gothic altar from the late 19th century deserves special attention with five statuettes depicting the Good Shepherd and the four evangelists , who can be recognized by their evangelist symbols .

Town hall and school

The building, which originally housed the mayor's offices as well as the school rooms, was built in 1919. With its white walls, which surround the windows with red bricks and the decoration of the roof ridge of wrought iron , the building is a typical example of the architectural style in the Third French Republic . The name of the community can be seen in red letters above the entrance. Today the building is still in good condition and still houses the mayor's offices.

The farms around the cultivation of maize and asparagus and the poultry breeding of ducks and geese are the most important economic factors of the community.
