history

The discovery of relics from the Gallo-Roman period suggests settlement in antiquity . It is possible that the village was on the Roman road that connected Bordeaux with Dax . It was first mentioned in the 13th century in a document from the English king, who allowed the construction of a water mill between the lake and the sea. The village was under the influence of Mimizan for a long time, there was no real center. Its development got a boost in the 18th century when numerous winemaking families settled here. In the following century, several factories were established, including a brick factory and a resin processing plant .

Population development

After the records began, the population rose to an initial high of around 400 in the 1870s. As a result, the population gradually shrank to around 310 people by the 1930s. In the period that followed, a dynamic growth phase began that continues today and results in new highs.

Parish Church of Saint-Mommolin
  • Parish church, dedicated to St. Mummolenus, the second abbot of the Abbey of Fleury in the 7th century. Only the apse of the structure erected on the lake shore in the 12th century has survived the centuries. In the 15th century a bell tower was added, which, with its very thick walls and embedded loopholes, was also intended to fulfill a military function. In the 19th century several repairs were carried out on the roof in 1810, 1846 and 1888 and on the bell tower in 1896. The church consists of a nave with a nave , which is extended with a semicircular apse. Two side chapels , opened by basket arches, form a false transept. The ceilings are as paneling worked, the walls of ferrous sandstone brick, Garluche called, which is typical of the country. The western entrance to the interior has a pointed arch shape with three archivolts . A door on the south side with a segmented arch gives access to the vestibule, in which a support over four meters long shows geometric motifs (cross, rosettes , cylinders, setting suns, angles), fish scales and irises as reliefs . The style of these ornaments reflects folk art of the 15th and 16th centuries. Three stained glass windows are works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux from 1895. The first window, which was inspired by a painting by the French painter Jean Jouvenet , illustrates the visit of Jesus to Martha and Maria . Jesus turns his gaze to Mary, who listens to him, while Martha, averted, seems to be busy with household chores. The colors of Mary's face are brighter than the other two, possibly a sign that the window was painted over in the 20th century. The second window shows Vincent de Paul as a copy of an engraving by Alfred-André Géniole. The saint, who is venerated for his charity towards the poor and orphans, wears his habit and is surrounded by children and abandoned newborns. The third window shows a representation of Vicenta María López y Vicuña . She is dressed in a red cloth and holds the martyr's palm in her left hand and a crown of plants in her right hand. The landscape in the background shows ancient buildings. After the last expansion, the window was reversed and the painted side has been facing outwards ever since. The church houses a wooden bust of St. Mummolenus that dates from the 18th century. He is depicted bearded, with the miter and the gold-colored choir shirt of a bishop . Legend has it that the saint came to the hermitage in Aureilhan. The bust has been classified as a Monument historique since December 17, 2001 Logo monument historique - rouge ombré sans texte.svg. Many other items of equipment date from the 18th to 20th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
Statue of St. Rufina at the spring of the same name
  • Source of St. Rufina . It is located near the parish church of Aureilhan and was once revered for its healing powers for skin diseases. Mothers used to visit them to heal cradle cap in their babies. They dipped a handkerchief into the water, applied it to the skin and then left the handkerchief on the spot. The water has also been used for other skin diseases such as eczema and acne . The ritual prescribed to rub yourself with the water on an empty stomach for nine days, to recite an Ave Maria Maria and to pray in front of the statue of the saint. The source and statue used to be in a neo-medieval chapel next to the church. Upon entering, the fountain of the spring could be seen and the statue rested on an altar. Stained glass windows in the chapel told episodes from the lives of the saints. In 1955 a violent storm destroyed the chapel. Only the fountain withstood what the residents saw as a miracle.
  • Darricau manor house. General Augustin Darricau gave the property its name. He was born in Tartas in 1773 and died in Dax in 1819. He was the descendant of a large line of landowners along Lake Aureilhan. Pierre Sargos, first mayor of Mimizan, bought the property from the children of General Darricau. He had the old building torn down and a new manor house built in 1828.
