El Cerrejón in northern Colombia, with 700 km² the largest open-cast coal mine in the world

La buena vida - The good life is a German documentary film by Jens Schanze from 2015. The film focuses on the relocation of European coal production to Colombia , where an indigenous group is suffering from the consequences of resettlement. The cinema release in Germany was on May 14, 2015.

content

Jairo Fuentes is the young leader of the Wayúu community Tamaquito, which lives in the forests of northern Colombia. So far they have been able to live from what nature has given them, but their village is threatened by the huge El Cerrejón open-cast mine , in which hard coal is mined for energy production in Germany, the Netherlands and Great Britain. In a resettlement process organized by Colombia's largest coal company, Cerrejón, the residents of Tamaquito are to move to a new village where they will benefit from running water and modern accommodation.

The film accompanies the process and questions the excessive coal extraction against the background of the European striving for prosperity. According to its own statement, the Cerrejón Group organizes the resettlement of the village community of Tamaquito in accordance with the standards of the World Bank . But the Wayúu's new home reveals itself to be desolate and barren, the promised water connection dries up after a few days. The attempt by Fuentes to draw attention to the situation in his village at the shareholders' meeting of the raw materials giant Glencore , which is involved in Cerrejón , remains unsuccessful.

criticism

The film service judges that the long-term documentary observation is visually impressive. The magazine Epd Film particularly emphasizes the presentation of the “socio-technical measures of corporate and state representatives”, the “eviction bureaucratically correct (“ those present confirm the transparency of the process according to the standards of the World Bank ”) and with the concentrated use of stupid workshops and want to handle euphemisms with as little resistance as possible ”.

Awards

When DOK.fest Munich , the film was nominated in the section "DOK.international". In addition, it received the rating "particularly valuable" from the German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) . The statement of the jury stated that the “touching documentary takes sides by accompanying its actors and letting them speak for themselves”. In this way, "Jens Schanze succeeds in making the politically explosive approach of an international coal company against the indigenous population of Colombia public and denouncing it". In January 2016 the film received the Bavarian Film Award . "In almost five years of work, the director achieves the almost impossible: With a cleverly placed dramaturgical bracket, he gets the viewer to grapple with the existential needs of an indigenous South American people," said the jury's statement.
