history
Finds of polished axes from the Neolithic period show that the area was settled early. The parish was first mentioned in the scriptures in the 13th century and was known through the centuries for its famous de Cauna family. The first member mentioned was Jean de Cauna, Bishop of Dax in 1203, who accompanied Richard the Lionheart to Palestine on the Third Crusade . Another family member, Arnaud de Cauna, made a name for himself in 1356 when he took part in the Battle of Poitiers . In 1364 he was appointed Seneschal of Marsan . Jean de Cauna, abbot of Saint-Sever Abbey in the 15th century, took part in the rebuilding of the abbey in 1430. During the siege of Tartas , a member of the family sided with the English and in 1442 gave the fortified village to the French King Charles VII. The community could not escape the events of the Fronde in the 17th century. In June 1653 it was the scene of a confrontation between the parties of the French King Louis XIV and the Prince de Condé .
Population development
After records began, the population rose to a peak of almost 800 by the middle of the 19th century. As a result, the size of the community sank with short recovery phases until the 1980s to a level of around 390 inhabitants, before moderate growth set in at the turn of the millennium, which continues today.

This is equipped with three windows, which are shaped like the windows of the nave . The ground floor of the bell tower , which towers in front of the long building, is open as an entrance porch on three sides via round arches. The entrance door is decorated with a heraldic shield, which shows a diamond and is surmounted by a helmet with a Gothic inscription. The first floor of the bell tower is illuminated by arched windows on all three sides. Above it, a tower clock shows passers-by the time. On the top level, the tower has sound openings on all sides in the form of arched double windows. Its polygonal spire is covered with slate. Inside the church there is an organ from the second half of the 19th century with a neo-classical prospect . It was donated to the parish between 1860 and 1865 by the Baron de Cauna and its instrumental part has been classified as a Monument historique since April 1, 1985 .
- Cauna Castle. The first castle was built in the 12th century by the youngest vice Count built family of Marsan. The Fronde clashes did not leave the property unscathed. The troops of the Prince de Condé held the castle when the king's troops stormed it, almost completely destroying it. What remains of the original castle is the 20 m high, square tower, which was remodeled between the 17th and 18th centuries. It is made of pink bricks , a building material that has been used since the 14th century. The tower is entered from the outside via a horseshoe-shaped troop. The residential wing was rebuilt in the 18th century. The castle is still owned by the Cauna family today.
