Marsan ( Gaskognisch Marçan ) is a French commune with 471 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the municipality association Coteaux Arrats Gimone . Its inhabitants are called Marsannais / Marsannaises .

geography

Marsan is located on a hill about 11 kilometers east-northeast of the city. Also in the east of the Gers department. The community consists of the villages En Blandin and Marsan, several hamlets and individual farms. In terms of traffic, the municipality is on the D509 and has its own connection to the N124 . The N21 also only passes a few kilometers to the west.

history

A castle has certainly existed since the 12th century. Because around the year 1170 an Aimeric de Montesquiou is mentioned as a castle owner. This first castle is destroyed in a dispute between the Count of Armagnac and the Archdiocese of Auch. In the 18th century, today's castle was built on the same site. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Haut-Armagnac, which was part of the province of Gascogne. The community belonged to the District of Auch from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Marsan was within the canton of Gimont from 1793 to 2015 . The municipality has been assigned to the arrondissement Auch since 1801.
