Saint-Paul-de-Baise ( Gascon Sent Pau de Baïsa ) is a French municipality with 104 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gers in the region Occitania (2015 Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the arrondissement Auch and to the community association Artagnan de Fezensac . The residents call themselves Saint-Paulois / Saint-Pauloises .

geography

Saint-Paul-de-Baïse is located around 22 kilometers northwest of Auch in the center of the Gers department. The community consists of scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. There are numerous vineyards. The river Baïse crosses the municipality in a northerly direction and in parts forms the eastern municipality boundary.

Neighboring communities are Rozès in the north-west and north, Bonas in the east, Jegun in the south-east, Saint-Jean-Poutge in the south, Vic-Fezensac in the south-west and Marambat in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Paul-de-Baïse in the county of Vic-Fezensac in the Armagnac region lay within the historic Gascony landscape and shared its fate. From 1793 to 1801, Saint-Paul-de-Baïse belonged to the District Condom and the Canton of Lannepax. From 1801 to 2015 the municipality was assigned to the Arrondissement Condom and from 1801 to 2015 it belonged to the canton of Valence-sur-Baïse (originally canton Valence).

Population development

The population development is typical for a French rural community. The development between 1793 and 1831 is normal with strong growth. The subsequent strong rural exodus began later than in other communities in the region. Between 1990 and today, the population ranged from 100 to 110 people.

The community is far away from national traffic routes and has no rail or bus connections. The main regional transport routes are the D939 and the N124 passing through the municipality, with connections in Vic-Fezensac and Saint-Jean-Poutge.
