Gaujac is a French commune with 66 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the canton Val de Save (until 2015: canton Lombez ).

The inhabitants are called Gaujacais and Gaujacaises .

Gaujac is located about 27 kilometers southeast of Auch in the Région naturelle Comminges on the southeastern edge of the department.

Waters

Gaujac lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Marcaoue , a right tributary of the Gimone , flows for short sections along the western municipal area. In the extreme southwest it is dammed into a lake. The Saraillé, a right tributary of the Marcaoue, has its source in Gaujac. In addition, the Esquinson, a left tributary of the Save and the Ruisseau de Moysenne, a left tributary of the Gesse cross the territory of the municipality.

history

The place Gaujac was mentioned from the 12th century. The village was probably built in the same century near a cone-shaped, man-made hill still visible. In 1395, the Count of Astarac granted the residents the collection of customs duties, which favored the expansion of the village. Today no medieval building elements have been preserved in the village .

Population development

After the records began, the number of inhabitants rose to a high of around 240 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, with intermittent recovery phases, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of around 35 inhabitants by the turn of the millennium, before a phase of growth began. which continues to this day.
