Garravet is a French commune with 157 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the canton Val de Save (until 2015: canton Lombez ).

The inhabitants are called Garravetois and Garravetoises .

Garravet is located about 37 kilometers south-east of Auch in the Région naturelle Comminges on the south-eastern border with the neighboring Haute-Garonne department .

Garravet lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Aussoue , a right tributary of the Save , flows along the eastern border of the municipality. The Espinne and the Ruisseau d'Aulin, tributaries of the Aussoue, cross the territory of the municipality. The Ruisseau d'Aulin is dammed up into a small lake in the southern municipality on the border with the neighboring municipality of Saint-Lizier-du-Planté.

history

The area of ​​the community was settled in Gallo-Roman times . There was a necropolis in ancient times and in the early Middle Ages in a place with the field name La Noguère , where the former church of Saint-Julian was located. In the 12th century, the Templars built a fortified barn in the heart of today's village, which was subsequently converted into a castle . Today you can still see some remains of trenches, an old fortress wall, a porch and a door with a blurred coat of arms.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 515 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of around 120 inhabitants, with intermittent recovery phases until the turn of the millennium, before a phase of growth set in. which continues to this day.
