Gaujan is a French commune with 118 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement Auch and the canton Val de Save (until 2015: canton Lombez ).

geography

Gaujan is located about 28 kilometers south-southeast of Auch in the historic province of Armagnac on the southeastern border to the neighboring Haute-Garonne department .

Waters

Gaujan lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Gimone , a left tributary of the Garonne, crosses the territory of the municipality together with its left tributaries,

  • the Peyré,
  • the Ruisseau de Massès,
  • the Ruisseau de la Hountette and
  • the Lère.

In addition, Gaujan is crossed by left tributaries of the Gesse :

  • the Ruisseau de la Hount,
  • the Ruisseau d'en Casérès,
  • the Ruisseau de Laveran and
  • the Ruisseau de Saint-André.

history

In 1823 the former parishes of Marun and Lacaze were incorporated.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 435 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of around 105 inhabitants before the first decade of the 21st century, with intermittent recovery phases a growth phase set in that continues to this day.
